What Kihachiro Onitsuka didn’t know in 1949, when he started sewing shoes in his living room, was that he was making a whole lot more than a shoe. So with some tough rubber and cotton laces, he set out to make sure “a good pair of athletic shoes sat at every door stoop.” A philosophy he soon shared with the rest of the world. In 1977, the Onitsuka Co. Ltd. grew to become ASICS. ASICS is an acronym derived from Anima Sana In Corpore Sano, a Latin phrase meaning; “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.” It’s an ancient ideal on which Mr. Onitsuka lived his life and built a company. And build he did. From family rooms to locker rooms, ASICS is now recognized as a leader in athletic shoes and apparel – always on the crux of something new, something comfier, something to keep you warmer, something to keep you drier and everything to keep you moving.
