What Kihachiro Onitsuka didn’t know in 1949, when he started sewing shoes in his living room, was that he was making a whole lot more than a shoe. He was giving his native Kobe, Japan, optimism and purpose. You see, Mr. Onitsuka believe that an active lifestyle was key to a strong mind, a strong heart and a strong community. So with some tough rubber and cotton laces, he set out to make sure “a good pair of athletic shoes sat at every door stoop.” A philosophy he soon shared with the rest of the world. In 1977, the Onitsuka Co. Ltd. grew to become ASICS. ASICS is an acronym derived from Anima Sana In Corpore Sano, a Latin phrase meaning; “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.” It’s an ancient ideal on which Mr. Onitsuka lived his life and built a company. And build he did.
